Stained Glass Artist
The stained glass artist uses a wide variety of glass. Ripple glass is a textured glass often used in decorative windows. While the glass is still hot, the ripple texture is rolled on, in either wide ripple or in a fine spaghetti ripple. Some types of textured glass include granite glass, alligator glass, hammered glass, and ripple glass.
Flashed glass, which is generally red, consists of a clear pane of glass with a very thin layer of color flashed onto the surface. The surface is sometimes etched so that the clear glass under the surface is revealed. Crackle glass is made by dipping a molten cylinder of glass into water. With this process, the inner layer of glass stays warm while the outside crackles. After being sliced down the side, a flat sheet is formed.
In glue-chip glass, a pane of glass is covered with a layer of animal glue and then heated in a drying oven; the glue contracts, leaving a crackled, feathery texture. As the glue contracts in the drying process, the result is a feathery, crackled texture.
